Pub and Restaurants urged to ready their Outdoor Spaces

Following a very disruptive spring season for the hospitality market, bars, restaurants and cafes are being advised to get their outdoor seating areas ready for customers as lockdown guidelines begin to relax across the country.

The hospitality sector has been hit harder than most during the pandemic, and has seen thousands of small businesses close to collapse since restrictions were imposed in March. But, following months of doom and gloom for the sector, there is some better news on the horizon.

Pub beer gardens and restaurants with outdoor spaces are likely to be among the first areas to get go ahead for a restricted reopening as part of the first phase of exiting lockdown beginning on June 1st.

The move comes off the back of scientific evidence showing the risk from Covid-19 is much lower outdoors than indoors. This is due to the fact that the virus appears to spread less easily because of the ventilation factor and UV rays limiting the lifespan of the virus.

Outdoor spaces - key to the hospitality industry post-lockdown

All businesses planning to re-open will need to meet the Government's new  'COVID-19 Secure' guidelines

It is likely that there will be further, more detailed advice given to businesses with licences for outdoor seating about how best to initiate a restricted reopening and become COVID-secure. Premises without an outdoor licence may also be given ‘blanket permission’ to add seating to help support the industry.

But with the rush to meet the 'COVID-19 Secure' guidelines, it can be easy to overlook key aspects that could make the difference between an outdoor space being a viable proposition commercially and it not.

Installing outdoor heating is a proven way to maximise potential outdoor occupancy and trade on cooler days and evenings. Whilst gas patio burners have sometimes been chosen for such settings they heat via convection. This means that they are particularly vulnerable to heat loss resulting from air and wind movement which also reduces their efficiency.

By contrast, radiant infrared heaters require no pre-heating and experience minimum heat loss. As a result, radiant infrared heaters can offer an exceptional 96% efficiency compared to other heating methods.

Tansun offers a comprehensive range of commercial-grade outdoor heaters.
