As the lockdown eases, the hospitality sector is looking to its outdoor spaces to provide safe, socially-distanced capacity. In this blog we look at the part that outdoor heating can play in optimising the role that they can play.

In February 2021 the government set out a 4-Step roadmap on how England will see COVID restrictions start to lift. That roadmap set April 12 as the earliest date that businesses with licences for outdoor seating can reopen. 

There is growing confidence that the April 12 easing is on track so bars and restaurants have been looking at ways to maximise their square footage in order to comply with social distancing rules. 

With this in mind, venues are being encouraged to make the most of their spaces to make them more enjoyable for the influx of visitors expected over the next few months.  Installing efficient and effective outdoor heating to make areas both comfortable and inviting as well as being affordable for businesses is one of the ways they can do this.

Outside areas offer lower risk of transmission

This is because the droplets of the virus disperse rapidly in the wind meaning experts have been able to offer reassurance that passing someone for a few seconds outdoors presents a low risk of contracting COVID-19.

In fact, some studies have shown that activities held outdoors in warmer temperatures pose a lower COVID risk than those done in indoor spaces, so many businesses and services are urged to adapt their work so that they can get the country moving again.

Outdoor seating at bars, restaurants and cafes will become acceptable as long as it is done correctly, and is a way people can enjoy themselves in a way they did before lockdown. Spaced-out seating will be just like any other outdoor activity, with sitting apart just a small price to pay for claiming back a piece of normality, and providing a warm environment on cooler days is an important starting point. Infrared heating also doesn’t impose any additional risks that other types of heating might, including the circulation of air to create warmth.
